Video: Designing A Purpose Driven Organization

At the end of 2022, Julian presented some of 11A Collaborative’s early work designing purpose-driven organizations. In this presentation, he discusses the pro-bono work he did to help design the Manhattan Borough President’s office during Mark Levine’s transition into that role. The presentation describes some fundamental concepts of horizontal organization design, the bringing together of the different parts of an organization to work collectively on strategic outcomes, which in this case were Equity, Climate Resiliency, and Public Health. You can check out the original presentation (with slides) at the Organization Design Forum.

A few years after this work was completed, the Borough President’s Transition Team had this to say about it: “Julian's guidance, thoughtfulness, and approach allowed the Levine 2021 Transition team to grapple with the cultural, organizational, and growth challenges that come with expanding from small local office to county level executive. With his help, our team was able to develop the tools necessary to ensure that we aligned the entire organization with a new set of goals and a stylistic approach that matched the principal's priorities to serve our constituents.”
